IT Students: Welcome to the IT blog!

Hello college IT students!  This is my personal IT blog.  I have included lots of resources for my current and past IT students to help enable their success in the IT field.

It is critical for you once you are an IT professional to continue to learn, to monitor IT news and IT trends so that you can navigate the IT field successfully.   This post is to introduce you to the resources I have provided that will assist you in your journey as an IT professional.

First, note the menu bar under the top banner (Mobile users tap the Home bar at the top).  These buttons (or tabs) take you to major pages of information. Take a few minutes to explore each topic link.

Innovation, Emerging Technology and Opportunity

Only a few years ago, at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, Eric Schmidt (the head of Google) stated:

"[In the future], the Internet will disappear… you won’t even sense it, it will be part of your presence all the time.”

We are starting to see how this might happen. If you have Google Home, Windows with Cortana, an iPhone with Siri, or Amazon Alexa you are able to interact with the web using your voice, without having to start an app or even open a browser. The "internet of things" refers to the interconnection of devices to the internet and each other to allow them to streamline and enhance our lives. Examples of IoT devices include appliances such as refrigerators that can give you a grocery list, smart door locks, light switches, thermostats, etc. While these devices are connected to the internet and are leveraging the power of the Web in the background, we simply take them for granted and just "use" them.

Are You a Transfer Student at a Community College?

Tips on Transferring from a 2 Year to 4 Year College

Many students use a community college or another two-year college as a stepping-stone to a four-year college and a bachelor’s degree. If you want to take this path, here’s what you should do:

·         Make sure that the credits you earn from your classes at the two-year college will count at your four-year college so you can start out there as a junior. This can save you time and money.

·         Sign up for a transfer program at a two-year college. These programs include the same kinds of courses that you’d take in your first two years at a four-year college. They’re designed specifically to help you succeed at making the transition.·  

Troubleshooting & Rescue Tools

Here is a summary of some of the troubleshooting tips and  tools available from Microsoft or third parties for free.  Note that for third party tools you can download an "iso" file that can be burned directly to a CD (or DVD if size requires it), or you can use a USB boot tool (see my other post on creating bootable USB drives).  The Yumi tool has built in links to all the troubleshooting tools it supports!
